Floating Shelves vs Mantel Beams vs Bracketed Shelves: What’s the Difference?Updated 2 months ago
We often get asked about the difference between our floating shelves, mantel beams and bracketed shelves. While some of these products can look similar at first glance; and in some cases, be used interchangeably; there are a few key design and installation differences to be aware of before choosing the right option for your space.
Mantel Beams
Our mantel beams are specifically designed to create a strong, architectural feature in your home.
- Orientation & Profile: Mantels are either square in profile or so the longer face of the beam’s cross-section is installed flush to the wall (For example a 4x6 mantel would have the 6-inch side flush against the wall); this creates a bold, solid appearance that reads as a beam rather than a shelf.
- Fixing Method: Mantel beams are installed using teardrop fixings, which provide a secure and concealed method of attachment.
- Overall Look: Because of their proportions and orientation, mantels have a more substantial, traditional beam-like appearance.
Floating Shelves
Our floating shelves are designed to appear as if they're built into your wall, each floating shelf features hidden brackets for a clean, minimalist look.
- Orientation & Profile: Floating shelves are installed with the smallest side flush to the wall (For example, a 6x4 floating shelf would have the 4-inch side flush against the wall), meaning the shelf projects outward. This gives them a more classic shelf-like appearance.
- Fixing Method: Floating shelves use concealed bracket fixings, allowing the shelf to appear as though it is built into your wall.
- Can They Be Used as a Mantel? Yes- floating shelves can be used as mantels. However, because of their proportions and how they project from the wall, they will retain more of a shelf look rather than the solid beam aesthetic of a true mantel.
Bracketed Shelves
Our bracketed shelves are the most versatile option and can be installed on any wall in your home, including plasterboard walls.
- Fixing Method: Bracketed shelves are supported by visible brackets. This fixing method allows them to support a higher load than floating shelves and makes them suitable for non-solid walls.
- Style Options: We offer a wide range of handcrafted metal shelf brackets in styles including industrial, rustic, contemporary, and traditional designs.
Wall Type & Installation Guidance
- Solid Walls: Both our mantel beams and floating shelves are suitable for installation on solid walls.
- Plasterboard Walls: If you are planning to install shelving yourself on plasterboard walls, we recommend choosing from our range of bracketed shelves, which are specifically designed for these wall types.
- Timber Frame/Stud Walls: With the assistance of a professional joiner or a skilled DIY enthusiast, our floating shelves and mantels can also be successfully fitted to timber frame walls.
Choosing the Right Option
- Choose a mantel beam if you want a bold, structural feature with a traditional beam appearance.
- Choose a floating shelf if you prefer a lighter, modern look or want a versatile shelf that can also double as a mantel when required.
- Choose a bracketed shelf if you would like to install a shelf on a non-solid wall or want a shelf with visible brackets.
If you’re unsure which option is best for your project, our team is always happy to help you decide.
