Why does my pine shelf have splits?Updated 2 months ago

Our pine shelves are crafted from solid kiln-dried timber. This means the wood has been carefully dried in a controlled environment to reduce its moisture content before it’s turned into your furniture. While kiln-dried pine holds significantly less moisture than our air-dried oak (making it generally more stable), it’s still a natural material—and natural timber can occasionally develop small splits or cracks over time.

These splits are a result of the timber continuing to respond to its environment. Changes in temperature and humidity in your home may cause the wood to subtly expand and contract. In very rare cases, this can lead to fine surface splits forming, particularly in more rustic, chunky cuts of pine.

It’s important to note that these are not faults, but rather part of the charm of working with real, solid wood. They won’t affect the strength or performance of your shelf, and in most cases, they add to the rustic aesthetic that makes each piece truly one of a kind.

If you’re ever unsure about what’s normal or want reassurance, we’re always happy to look at photos and advise.
